Last month I photographed Interstate 95 for a feature article in Philadelphia Magazine ("Highway to Hell" March 2025, words by David Murrell). “Everyone knows the construction of Interstate 95 along the Delaware River waterfront 60 years ago was a catastrophe of urban planning. So why is PennDot planning to make the road even bigger?”
Tasked with documenting the highway and its relationship to the surrounding communities, the specific direction was "...lean into the grit and the idea that 95 is a scar running through the city..."
It’s a rare opportunity to do a mix of street, architectural, aerial, and portrait work all for the same project. Doing so was great fun and really satisfying. Making black & white images with a grainy aesthetic reminiscent of the mid-century era when the highway was built? Yes, please!
I spent two afternoons shooting... and ended up with way more photos than could ever be used in the article.
